    Participatory approaches for watershed management are now considered essential for sustainable natural resources management and yet there is very little opportunity for intellectual participation by the people. This requires understanding of the local knowledge systems and their institutional context. In this paper, we provide an overview of the conceptual framework which can facilitate such participation. The full report being published separately includes case studies of farmers’ innovations in natural resources management.

    A Comparative Study on Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Psychological Wellbeing Among Orphan and Non-Orphan Adolescents

    Background: Orphans, other vulnerable children, and adolescents living in institutions are more susceptible to developing behavioral and emotional problems because they lack the love and care of a family. The current study intends to investigate stress, anxiety, and depression in orphans living in the chosen orphanages in Mysuru, Karnataka. Methodology: Descriptive research methods were implemented in this research. A total of 200 adolescents made up the representative sample, including 100 orphans and 100 non-orphans. The data were taken from numerous orphanages and schools located in the city of Mysore. The samples were chosen using purposive sampling techniques. The level of depression, anxiety, and psychological well-being among orphans was examined using a standardized interview schedule. A structured interview schedule that includes socio-demographic factors, stress, depression, and anxiety as well as the Ryff psychological well-being questionnaire were the instruments used for data collection. The analysis of data was done using version SPSS, 24.00. Results: The majority of respondents (100%) belonged to 14-18 years of age, and most of the orphans had severe and extremely severe depression anxiety, and stress compared to non-orphans. And there is a significant difference between study variables among the orphan and non-orphan groups. Conclusion: While compared to non-orphans, orphan adolescents have a high level of Depression anxiety, and stress and a low level of psychological well-being. So, there is a need to provide intervention for orphans to improve their psychological well-being

    Colocalization of intranuclear lamin foci with RNA splicing factors

    The lamins form a fibrous network underlying the inner nuclear membrane termed the nuclear lamina. In order to gain insights into the role of lamins in nuclear organization, we have characterized a monoclonal antibody (LA-2H10) raised against recombinant rat lamin A that labels nuclei in a speckled pattern in all cells of unsynchronized populations of HeLa and rat F-111 fibroblast cells, unlike the typical nuclear periphery staining by another monoclonal antibody to lamin A, LA-2B3. In immunolocalization studies the lamin A speckles or foci were found to colocalize with the RNA splicing factors SC-35 and U5-116 kD, but not with p80 coilin found in coiled bodies. Lamin B1 was also associated with these foci. These foci dispersed when cells entered mitosis and reformed during anaphase. The differential reactivity of LA-2H10 and LA-2B3 was retained after nuclei were extracted with detergents, nucleases and salt to disrupt interactions of lamins with chromatin and other nuclear proteins. Using deletion fragments of recombinant lamin A, the epitope recognized by LA-2H10 was located between amino acids 171 and 246. Our findings are consistent with a structural role for lamins in supporting nuclear compartments containing proteins involved in RNA splicing

    Initiation of coconut cell suspension culture from shoot meristem derived embryogenic calli: A preliminary study

    An attempt was made to establish highly competent embryogenic cell suspension culture in coconut, a species recalcitrant to in vitro culture. Embryogenic calli were initiated from shoot meristem explants of coconut. Y3 medium supplemented with 2.4-D (4.5 μM) and glutamine (34.2 μM) was found to be the best medium to initiate cell suspension. Growth evaluation was done by packed cell volume (PCV) and it was found that maximum growth volume of 9.9% was reached at 200 days of culture initiation. About 52% of viable cells were detected through fluorescent microscopy. Cell aggregation was noticed in Y3 medium supplemented with glutamine (34.2 μM), malt extract (100mg/l), biotin (40.9 μM) and kinetin (9.3 μM), but further progress could not be achieved. It was also observed that embryogenic calli were not of a friable type, but were associated with densely aggregated cells. Because of its hard nature, we were unsuccessful to obtain high quality cell suspension

    A rocket-borne Langmuir probe response to continuous and pulsed sweep modes

    Nightime ionospheric electron density and temperature are measured using a rocket-borne Langmuir probe (LP) launched on board a SONDA III rocket from the Brazilian equatorial rocket launching station in Alcantara-MA, at 23:51 hrs (LT) on May 31, 1992. A sweep voltage varying between -IV and +2.5V is applied to the spherical LP sensor alternately in continuous and pulsed modes. In the continuous mode the effect of contamination of the sensor surface on the current collected by the sensor is clearly seen in the current-voltage characteristics and thereby on the electron temperature estimated, while this effect is practically absent in the pulsed mode operation.     Novel multicomponent B2-ordered aluminides: Compositional design, synthesis, characterization, and thermal stability

    For the first time, multicomponent alloys belonging to a B2-ordered single phase were designed and fabricated by melting route. The design concept of high entropy alloys is applied to engineering the transition metal sublattice of binary B2 aluminide. The equiatomic substitution of transition metal elements in the Ni sublattice of binary AlNi followed to produce Al(CoNi), Al(FeNi), Al(CoFe), Al(CoFeNi), Al(CoFeMnNi), and Al(CoCuFeMnNi) multicomponent alloys. CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach was used to predict the phases in these alloys. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to confirm the B2 ordering in the alloys. Thermal stability of the B2 phase in these alloys was demonstrated by prolonged heat treatments at 1373 K and 1073 K up to 200 h. © 2020 by the author. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland
